PORT HUENEME, CA — The Port of Hueneme is amping up its clean energy game, thanks to a fresh $4 million grant that’s helping the “Greenest Port in the U.S.” get even greener. With this latest funding, the Port is charging forward — literally — on its path toward achieving zero emissions by 2030.
The new grant, awarded through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program and approved by the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), will allow the Port to complete its North Terminal Shoreside Power Project. Once finished, vessels docking at the Port will be able to plug into shore power and turn off their diesel engines — cutting emissions and improving air quality for surrounding communities.
“We’re thrilled to receive this critical funding for our Shoreside Power Project,” said Jess J. Ramirez, President of the Oxnard Harbor District/Port of Hueneme. “The Port takes its longstanding commitment to sustainability seriously, and we can now finish a project that will bring cleaner air to local communities.”
Initially funded with $11.9 million in state and federal grants, the project hit a few speed bumps — namely, severe winter storms in late 2023 that disrupted progress. But with this new wave of support, the Port is bouncing back and upgrading the system to withstand weather impacts, improve safety, and ensure the power system lasts for years to come.
“This funding helps us do more than just finish what we started — it strengthens the system against future disruptions,” said Kristin Decas, CEO and Port Director. “The Port has always been known for its resilience, and this is just one more example of how we keep pushing forward to protect both our industry and our neighbors.”
The Shoreside Power Project is a shining example of what happens when teamwork powers progress. “Partnerships like the one between VCTC and the Port of Hueneme are critical to improving Ventura County,” said Martin Erickson, Executive Director of VCTC. “Projects like Shoreside Power are important to move forward, and we’re proud to support the Port in this effort.”
Construction is expected to resume this summer, and when complete, the Port’s plug-in system will allow docked ships to drastically reduce emissions while maintaining operations — delivering real environmental benefits right here at home.
As one of the West Coast’s most efficient trade gateways, the Port of Hueneme plays a major role in the movement of fresh produce and automobiles. It’s also a vital economic engine, generating $2.8 billion in economic activity and supporting 25,000 trade-related jobs.
But it’s the Port’s commitment to environmental leadership that continues to set it apart. In 2017, it became the first California port to be Green Marine certified — and with this latest investment, it’s clear that the Port of Hueneme is full steam ahead on powering a cleaner future.
