AVALON — Every Wednesday morning this summer, Avalon’s iconic Green Pleasure Pier will transform into a lively fishing hotspot as young anglers cast lines and reel in memories during the return of the Kid’s Fishing Derby, a free community event that invites children ages 3 to 16 to drop a line in Avalon Bay.
Running from June 18 through August 20, 2025, the derby takes place every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Sponsored by the Catalina Outdoor Adventure Club and presented by Avalon Audio/Video and Smart Home, the event is part friendly competition and part island tradition, drawing locals and visitors alike for two hours of hands-on fishing fun.
Participation is free, and kids can bring their own fishing gear — either a rod and reel or a traditional handline. Don’t have one? No problem. Bait and gear are available for purchase or rent right on the pier, making it easy for families to jump into the action. A knowledgeable fishing guide will be on hand each week to offer tips, encouragement, and a little extra help for newcomers learning the ropes.
Prizes are awarded every Wednesday for Most Fish Caught, Biggest Fish, and Oddest Catch, giving kids a chance to win while learning patience, sportsmanship, and a little marine biology along the way.
The derby has become a cherished part of Catalina’s summer rhythm — offering a simple yet enriching way for children to connect with the sea, build confidence, and spend quality time outdoors. Families are encouraged to arrive early, grab a spot on the pier, and enjoy one of the island’s most charming seasonal traditions.
