Catalina’s Free Kid’s Fishing Derby Returns to Avalon Pier

AVALON — Every Wednesday morning this summer, Avalon’s iconic Green Pleasure Pier will transform into a lively fishing hotspot as young anglers cast lines and reel in memories during the return of the Kid’s Fishing Derby, a free community event that invites children ages 3 to 16 to drop a line in Avalon Bay. Running from June 18 through August 20, 2025, the derby takes place every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Sponsored by the Catalina Outdoor Adventure Club and presented by Avalon Audio/Video and Smart Home, the event is part friendly competition and part island tradition, drawing locals and visitors alike for two hours of hands-on fishing fun. Participation is free, and kids can bring their own fishing gear — either a rod and reel or a traditional handline. Don’t have one? No problem. Bait and gear are available for purchase or rent right on the pier, making it easy for families to jump into the action. A knowledgeable fishing guide will be on hand each week to offer tips, encouragement, and a little extra help for newcomers learning the ropes.
