DANA POINT — Each Sunday, Dana Wharf Sportfishing invites aspiring young anglers to the docks for an educational and hands-on experience designed just for kids. The popular Kids Fishing Clinic introduces children under 14 to the basics of fishing, guided by expert anglers who share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport.
The clinic begins at 12:15 p.m., where kids learn essential fishing techniques, from baiting hooks to proper casting. After the 30-minute session, families board the Sunday Afternoon ½-Day Fishing Trip at 12:45 p.m. for the chance to put their new skills to the test while enjoying the excitement of being on the open water.
Young anglers not only experience the thrill of catching fish but also have the chance to spot whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Each kid’s ticket includes the clinic and all necessary fishing equipment — a $30 value — making it an easy and affordable way for families to enjoy a day on the water together.
“The Sunday kids’ fishing clinic was started over 10 years ago and is a way to just have a trip that’s geared toward kids and their families. It’s been a win-win for everyone,” said Donna Kalez, co-owner of Dana Wharf Sportfishing.
“The number of people bringing their children out fishing — and teaching them the necessary skills while doing so — has been wonderful to see,” said Captain Mauricio. “The kids are getting as much out of learning to fish as they are from the camaraderie on board. And while the kids are thrilled by the activity, parents are equally excited to see the joy in their child’s face upon catching that first fish. Pardon the pun, but both parent and child get hooked.”
The clinic has become a beloved weekend tradition for local families and visitors alike, fostering a new generation of anglers and ocean enthusiasts.
