They just tore out the pier that was in front of the SS Palo Alto (aka The Cement Boat) because of this years storm damage. We used to visit it in the summers on vacation. It was fun to watch the surge from larger waves make mist up from the deck holes. Even before they closed it off it felt kind of adventurous to go out on to the Cement Boat.
What happens to boats that run aground off of the entrance to the San Diego channel. I noticed two such boats earlier in the year that may have broken away from the mooring balls near Zuniga Point. They remained grounded for over a month. Isn’t that on Navy property?
If you want to see the SS Palo Alto, I’d get out there before next winter, it really got hammered by the storms this winter, and much of the pier destroyed. They say they will rebuild the pier, but the Palo Alto is in pieces, and isn’t going to last forever.
