Free Virtual Workshop Teaches How to Stop the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species in California Waters

Boaters, anglers, and anyone who enjoys California’s waterways are invited to take part in a free virtual workshop aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in both salt and freshwater environments. The workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., is open to the public and will focus on how to identify invasive species and what actions can be taken to protect uninfested waterways.

Participants will learn how invasive species like quagga and zebra mussels, green crabs, Asian kelp, and other harmful invaders impact local ecosystems, recreational access, and the economy. The session will also cover the biology of these species, current management efforts in California, and best practices for cleaning boats and equipment to prevent their spread.

Advance registration is required by May 5, 2025, and can be completed here.

The event is hosted by a coalition of environmental and boating agencies, including the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways, California Coastal Commission, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Lands Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
