Join a Southern California Yacht Club

Joining a yacht club offers boaters a wealth of benefits, from fostering a sense of community to providing access to exclusive events and facilities. Throughout Southern California, several yacht clubs stand out for their rich histories, unique offerings, and commitment to boating enthusiasts. Membership in a yacht club extends beyond access to marinas and docking; it provides opportunities for education, networking, and participation in organized races and social events. It also offers reciprocal privileges, allowing members to enjoy the benefits of yacht clubs worldwide. In addition to the many practical advantages, joining a club enhances the boating experience by immersing members in a passionate community that shares a love for the water.

One of the most beloved yacht clubs in San Diego is Silver Gate Yacht Club (SGYC). Established in 1952, SGYC has become a staple on Shelter Island, welcoming both power and sailboat enthusiasts while fostering a deep sense of camaraderie among its members. SGYC is well known for its commitment to community service, hosting events such as the Wheelchair Regatta, which provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy of boating. Another highlight of the club’s annual calendar is the Schooner Cup, a celebrated regatta that supports charitable causes while drawing in competitive sailors. For those looking to nurture the next generation of boaters, SGYC also runs a Junior Sailing Program, emphasizing skill development and a love for the ocean among young sailors. Beyond events, members enjoy top-tier facilities, including 145 boat slips and an active social calendar that keeps the club’s community thriving.

For boaters based in North Orange County, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club (BCYC) in Corona del Mar is a fantastic option. Affectionately known as the “friendliest club on the bay,” BCYC offers a welcoming atmosphere while maintaining a high standard of excellence in boating and community activities.

“We’re proud to say that Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club is the only yacht club in Newport Harbor that owns its own marina and property,” said Scott R. Jones, General Manager for BCYC. “Any Regular membership here is truly an equity asset membership, which makes it a unique investment for our members.” Known affectionately as the ‘Friendliest Club in the Bay,’ BCYC also offers something no other club in the harbor can—a swimming pool exclusively for members and their families to enjoy.

BCYC is not only about great amenities—it’s also a hub for some of the most exciting events on the West Coast. “We’re honored to host the send-off party and dinner for the Newport to Ensenada Regatta, which brings together sailors from all over the California coast,” said Jones. “And thanks to our affiliation with the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA), we’re able to reciprocate with other yacht clubs, making it easy for boaters to visit facilities up and down the coast.”

The club also has a strong spirit of giving back. “Our members founded the ‘Home for Christmas’ foundation, which helps send young Marines from Camp Pendleton home for the holidays,” Jones shared. “It’s something we’re very proud of.”

In the world of competitive sailing, BCYC is equally respected. “Our Race Committee is considered one of the top in California,” he added. “In fact, we’ve been asked to support the 2028 Olympics, which is a huge honor.”

BCYC is also a place for families and future sailors. “We’re a very family-friendly club, and our Junior Sailing program runs year-round,” Dunne explained. “Each summer we host one of the top six-week sailing camps in the area, and we open it up to the community for enrollment.”

For those interested in visiting or enjoying the club’s offerings, BCYC is open Wednesday through Sunday, serving lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. “There’s always something happening at the club,” Dunne said, “and we love welcoming new faces.”

BCYC organizes a variety of cruises and social events throughout the year, including the Commodore’s Caribbean Cruise, a themed boating adventure that strengthens bonds among members. Another noteworthy event is the Shoreline Yacht Club Exchange Cruise, an opportunity for members to connect with fellow boaters from other clubs and foster lasting friendships. With well-maintained docking facilities, dining options, and a calendar filled with educational and social opportunities, BCYC provides a well-rounded experience for its members.

Further north, Ventura Yacht Club (VYC) stands as one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs on the West Coast. Founded in 1938, VYC has played a significant role in the development of Ventura Harbor and has been instrumental in advocating for improved facilities in the region. The club is well known for its youth sailing programs, which have produced talented sailors competing at both national and international levels.

We like to say Ventura Yacht Club is unpretentious, easy-going, and filled with like-minded members who enjoy a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere,” said Nick Moller on behalf of himself, General Manager of Ventura Yacht Club, Commodore Don Clark and Membership Chairperson Peter Acutt. “We’re fortunate to be located in a truly unique setting, with views of the ocean, harbor, and surrounding mountains—you really can’t beat the backdrop.”

VYC offers a range of amenities that make it more than just a club—it’s a destination. “We have a full-service restaurant and bar operated by a dedicated staff and overseen by me as General Manager,” Moller explained. “Plus, we’re proud to own and manage our own marina, giving members direct access to their boats and the water.”

The club is also rich with tradition and community events. “Our Opening Day and annual Open House, along with the Change of Command ceremony, are just a few of the highlights that bring members together throughout the year,” they said.

For sailing enthusiasts, the club’s racing and cruising calendar is packed. “Our Wet Wednesday Race Series runs from April through October and includes offshore races, Friday night dinghy races, and other fun sailing events,” they added. “Then there’s the annual Catalina Cruise, where around 40 club boats make the weeklong voyage to Emerald Bay—it’s a signature tradition.”

He also noted that the club’s cruising culture doesn’t stop there. “We organize monthly cruises to the Channel Islands, along with spontaneous excursions up and down the California coast. Whether you’re a competitive sailor or a casual cruiser, there’s something here for everyone.”

“At VYC, it’s not just about boats—it’s about community,” they concluded. “The combination of our location, programs, and laid-back culture makes Ventura Yacht Club a truly special place to be.

In addition to fostering a strong sailing culture, VYC prides itself on its do-it-yourself ethos, as members collectively maintain and enhance the club’s facilities. The club owns its clubhouse and slips, creating a unique environment where members take an active role in the preservation and growth of their boating community. VYC has also maintained its monthly newsletter, the Forecast, since 1940, keeping members informed about upcoming events, races, and club developments.

For those in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC) offers a premier sailing experience with a legacy that dates back to 1872, making it one of the oldest yacht clubs on the West Coast. The club is deeply ingrained in Santa Barbara’s maritime culture, with a strong emphasis on competitive sailing and community engagement. SBYC hosts a range of racing events, including the Staff Commodore Regatta, which takes place annually and celebrates the club’s past leaders while showcasing the skill and sportsmanship of its members. In addition to its vibrant racing scene, the club offers world-class facilities, a prime location along the Santa Barbara waterfront, and a welcoming atmosphere for both new and experienced boaters.

For those considering joining a yacht club, the benefits extend far beyond access to docking and marina services. Membership opens the door to a thriving community of boaters, creating opportunities for education, networking, and participation in exclusive events that enhance the boating lifestyle.

Looking for a club with a strong philanthropic presence, an active racing scene, or simply a friendly environment to connect with fellow boaters? Then you’re sure to find a Southern California yacht club that provides something to your liking. From Silver Gate Yacht Club’s commitment to charitable events in San Diego to Bahia Corinthian’s welcoming community in Orange County, Ventura Yacht Club’s deep-rooted history, and Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s love for sailing, each club offers a unique experience that enriches the boating lifestyle. No matter where a boater is located, joining a yacht club is an investment in both the sport and the community that makes it so special.
