Northrop & Johnson is pleased to announce that Paul MacDonald has joined the team as Sales and Charter Broker. Based in New Zealand and focusing on clients in both Australia and New Zealand, Paul brings extensive industry knowledge, hands-on sailing experience, and an entrepreneurial approach that aligns seamlessly with the company’s commitment to exceptional service and results.
A lifelong sailor, Paul began his journey on the water in P Classes at Kohimarama Yacht Club, progressing through OK dinghies to competing on Maxi boats in the international racing circuit. Notably, he was part of the crew aboard Sir Peter Blake’s Lion of New Zealand, which finished second in the 1985/86 Whitbread Round the World Race. These early achievements fostered a deep understanding of yacht design, performance, and seamanship.
Paul’s professional career is marked by innovation and leadership in the yachting sector. In 1988, he co-founded Marten Spars, pioneering the use of carbon fiber technology in luxury yachts. Following its 2006 merger with Southern Spars, he served as Head of Superyacht Sales, helping the brand achieve global recognition in carbon rigging solutions. His blend of technical expertise and client-focused solutions has earned him a reputation as a trusted industry advisor. More recently, Paul founded McD Yachts, a boutique brokerage in New Zealand, before making the move to Northrop & Johnson.
With a mission to make yachting more accessible, Paul draws on his wealth of personal sailing experience to help clients realize their own on-water ambitions. Northrop & Johnson is proud to welcome him to the global team and looks forward to the insight and expertise he will bring to clients in Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
