The first part of our week brought some pretty good fishing for both the half-day and three-quarter-day zones.
Half-day bass fishing was primarily with slider sinkers and live bait. We saw some solid calico bass action with relatively light loads. Water temperatures were between 65° and 67°. A few days we fished tight and shallow along the boilers, which made for some exciting calico bass action. Other trips focused on the open hard bottom, producing sand bass and a few sheephead on shrimp and clam baits.
Three-quarter-day trips continued to target rockfish. A day along the coast turned up plenty of bocaccio and reds for our anglers, with mixed bags that also included sculpin, whitefish, and sand dabs.
Out deep on the 14 Mile Bank, the bulk of the catch this week was made up of bank rockfish and chili peppers. Some standout bocaccio took jackpot honors a couple of days as well. Market squid showing up on the bank slowed the bite a bit, but the quality of the rockfish caught remained excellent. Anglers who stayed focused went home with solid limits and plenty of nice fillets. Conditions were good for drifting, and jig anglers fished 250–350g jigs without any trouble. That said, the weather shifted, and we’ve been off the water the past couple of days because of it.
